'Mike Hot-Pence' joining big LGBTQ dance party to greet real Pence
June 15--In addition to the drag queens and DJs slated to welcome Vice President Mike Pence outside the Renaissance Hotel Downtown upon his arrival Friday, the veep's gay doppelganger "Mike Hot-Pence" will be in attendance as well.
"Mike Hot-Pence," of internet fame and virality since Pence took office, has championed gay rights in response to Pence's long-standing push against LGBTQ rights. On any given day, "Mike Hot-Pence" can be seen in Time Square collecting donations for Planned Parenthood in a shirt and tie -- but without pants.
Liberal activist group ProgressOhio is co-hosting the "Big LGBTQ Dance Party" in response to Pence's speaking engagement to promote the Trump administration's tax cuts, which just so happens to fall on the same day Columbus kicks off its annual Pride Festival.
"We want to counter that anti-LGBT attitude that they have with a big, positive, loving dance party," said Jay Smith, one of the organizers, in a prepared statement.
The group announced Thursday the event had gained so much interest it had obtained a permit to shut down Gay Street from Pearl Alley to Third Street, outside the hotel where Pence will give his speech.
Attorney General Mike DeWine, the GOP candidate for governor, will introduce Pence at the event hosted by America First Policies, titled "Tax Cuts to Put America First."
The Facebook event for the dance party had more than 600 people scheduled to attend as of late Thursday afternoon.
The event will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. and overlap with Pence's speech, which is scheduled for 3:40 p.m.
